A typhoon likely to skirt Hong Kong could force jockey changes in both the Cox Plate and Manikato Stakes at
Typhoon Haima intensified from a severe tropical storm to a typhoon on Sunday and is expected to pass within 400km of Hong Kong later this week, which could mean jockeys Sam Clipperton and Joao Moreira are stuck in the Asian centre.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club permitted Clipperton to ride English in the Manikato Stakes and Moreira to ride Vadamos in the Cox Plate but could withdraw permission should the typhoon affect their travel plans.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club permits its jockeys to ride on Group I racedays elsewhere in the world providing the riders do not miss any local meeting.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported Victorian stewards are monitoring the situation.
"There is a forecast of a typhoon to hit Hong Kong, which would mean they might not be able to get back to ride there on Sunday and we are monitoring the situation," Racing Victoria deputy chief steward Robert Cram told the newspaper.
"Hong Kong has told us that they would not release jockeys if they cannot return for Sunday's meeting.
"Connections have been made aware of this and to prepare by having a jockey on standby if the Hong Kong jockeys cannot make the trip."
