Cavaloce Brings Up 58 for Testa Rossa

Mark Smith - Sunday October 16

A broodmare career beckoned for the Testa Rossa mare Cavaloce following her unplaced effort in the Listed Balaklava Cup on August 31 however the lure of a stakes win kept her in training for the Listed Durbridge Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

The Will Clarken-trained mare did the right thing by connections with a three-quarter length defeat of Lord Aspen (Good Journey) with Casino Wizard (Any Given Saturday) back in third.

Part of a 4-timer on the day for Jamie Kah, Cavaloce advances her record to 7 wins, 3 seconds and 4 thirds from 23 starts with earnings of $214,195.

Originally trained by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, the 6yo daughter of Testa Rossa was a $56,000 purchase out of the Supreme Thoroughbreds draft at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale in 2011.

She becomes the latest stakes winner out of an Encosta de Lago mare.

Her dam Refit, who failed to impress in two starts, is a half-sister to Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Reactive (Geiger Counter) and the Listed winner Fleischer (Danehill), the dam of stakes winners Coulis and Roubechon.

Refit has a 2yo filly by Foxwedge and foaled a Smart Missile colt on September 21 after missing to the same stallion in 2014.

Cavaloce becomes the 58th stakes winner for Vinery Stud's evergreen Testa Rossa (photo Mark Smith) who is currently serving his 16th book of mares at Vinery Stud for ma fee of $16,500.
