What Matters Now

Breednet - Thursday October 13
Midway through October and many breeding decisions have already been made, with many more already regretted.

Spring racing is upon us and the first crop runners of the class of 2016 are already hitting the tracks, and the leading sire tables are taking shape. The breeding and new racing season is well and truly underway.

So, you might ask, what matters now?

Well, as a mare owner, the following are what really matters NOW with regards to your stallion choice:

Proven Stakes producing sires FAST 'N' FAMOUS, DUPORTH and NOM DU JEU share one very important trait and that is they all boast terrific fertility rates.

Their lifetime fertility rates are as follows: Fast 'N' Famous 87%, Duporth 86%, Nom Du Jeu 85%.

PERFORMANCE

A stallion's ability to upgrade their mares is what marks the best out from the rest.

Take for example Duporth's most recent Stakes winner HEY DOC – a Group Two winner of the Stutt Stakes and third in the Group One Caulfield Guineas with a Timeform rating of 119, Hey Doc is the only black-type performer under his first two dams and the only Group One performer under his first five dams.

Va PensieroOPPORTUNITY

Group One victories on a stallion's resume are neither a prerequisite for success nor a reliable indicator of future success at stud.

There are great opportunities and financial reward to be had (with much less financial risk) for mare owners who choose opportunity over 'obvious'.

Take for example Fast 'N' Famous – a Group Three winner of the Gilgai Stakes, he had apparent Group One ability without the Group One win on his resume...by sire of sires Redoute's Choice, Fast 'N' Famous has now sired three individual Group One winners, has 64% winners to runners and boasts over 10% Stakes performers to runners.

When one compares the similarities of a successful proven sire like Fast 'N' Famous, or his paternal half-brother Not A Single Doubt (who by the way was 'only' a two-time Listed winner) to a first season sire like Va Pensiero (Stratum) then one can only be struck by the huge appeal (and opportunity) that a horse like Va Pensiero holds.
