Teeley Mare Features at Keeneland November Sale

Mark Smith - Sunday October 9
American mares have contributed significantly to the gene pool in Australia and while not many mares make the reverse trip, Australasian-bred mares have left a mark stateside most notably the Group III Newcastle Cocoa Cola Classic winner Zodiac Miss who produced just two foals before being killed by lightning.

One of those foals was multiple Eclipse Award winner and Horse Of The Year Azeri (Jade Hunter).

The increasing globalisation of the bloodstock industry  can be seen with the release of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock catalogue.

Hip 408 is a weanling colt by Claiborne Farm's wonderful success story War Front from the Encosta de Lago mare Drifting Cube, a sister to Coolmore Stud's popular stallion Rubick (pictured), who was sold at the Teeley Dispersal sale conducted by Magic Millions in 2014 and purchased by John Sikura of Hill 'N Dale Farm for $1.1 million.

At the same sale, Sikura secured Drifting Cube's three parts sister Taste Of Heaven for $1.5 million.

The War Front colt must hold a great deal of interest for Australian buyers as he is not only from a family that has an unmatched  record for producing stallions, Drifting Cube is a daughter of reigning champion broodmare sire Encosta de Lago whose daughters produced Divine Prophet and Seaburge, the first two home in Saturday's $1 million Caulfield Guineas

Sikura is widely recognised as one of the most astute players in the bloodstock world. At the 2015 Keeneland November sale, he topped the weanling sale at US$3 million for a War Front colt, which was equal to the highest priced yearling sold in North America from the same foal crop.

While the War Front weanling holds a great deal of interest, there is any number of well-credentialed broodmares that would be valuable acquisitions to the industry in Australia.

Just last Saturday, the Snitzel colt Russian Revolution, who is out of a US-bred mare, kept his unbeaten record intact when beating Astern and Capitalist in the Group II Roman Consul Stakes, while Newgate Farm's promising stallion Foxwedge is also out of a US mare.

The catalogue includes nine Grade 1 winning mares, many in foal to champion stallions like Tapit and War Front.
