The
first two sessions of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book One at
Newmarket in the UK have produced big results for two fillies from star
Australian mares Hveger and Melito.
Lot 109, a
Galileo filly from Hveger fetched 625,000 guineas to the bid of De Burgh Equine
/ James Harron Bloodstock on behalf of a Southern Hemisphere based client.
A Group I placed full sister to champion racehorse Elvstroem and half-sister to
Champion Miler Haradasun, Hveger has been at stud in the Northern Hemisphere
for some years and has proven a runaway success.
She is the dam of globe-trotting triple Group I winner Highland Reel and this
season's Group II winner Idaho, both of them sired by Galileo, who has proven a
highly successful partner for the daughter of Danehill.
"It's an international family," Hubie de Burgh told Thoroughbred Daily News.
"Galileo is making the most incredible broodmare sire, and unless you have one
of those in your [broodmare band], you're not going anywhere. It's just an
international family and the whole world is becoming so globalized, it's good
to get into such a global family. It's got top horses in the Northern Hemisphere
and absolute champions in the Southern Hemisphere. To get a Galileo filly as
good-looking as she is as well is great. She's got such high residual value."
Lot 191, a
Galileo filly from Melito fetched 500,000 guineas when bought by Emirates Park.
Purchased by Coolmore for $1,650,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions National
Broodmare Sale, Melito started her stud career in Australia but has since been
transferred to Ireland.
A dual Group I winning daughter of Redoute's Choice, Melito produced a smart
Japanese winner as her first foal in Australian bred Encosta de Lago colt
Campbell Junior and this filly is her third foal.
Emirates Park General Manager Bryan Carlson was at Newmarket to select and
secure the filly and was interviewed by Thoroughbred Daily News.
"She'll go to the breakers in the next
week or so and we'll decide [on a trainer] from there, but she'll stay here in
the UK," Carlson said.
"The boss, Nasser Lootah, is looking to have a few to breed and race here in
the UK. He's from Dubai and a lot of his friends race here.
"She's got that broodmare potential and if we want to take her down to
Australia we can, when she's finished racing. She's a lovely filly and I think
she'll suit both hemispheres in the long run. Galileo is doing so well up here,
so it just fitted with what the boss wanted."
