Super Sire Galileo Goes 1-2-3 in the Arc

Mark Smith - Monday October 3

Champion trainer Aidan  O'Brien and Coolmore's super sire Galileo continue to rewrite the record books with both celebrating a historic 1-2-3 finish in Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly.

After finishing runner-up in five consecutive Group One contests, the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Cup,  Prince of Wales's Stakes, Yorkshire Oaks, and Irish Champion Stakes who could begrudge last year's Breeders' Cup Turf heroine Found a return to the top podium.

The 4yo daughter of Galileo has only been off the board once in 19 starts.

With Ryan Moore in the saddle, Found travelled comfortably three pairs back on the rail and when Moore pressed the button, Found shouldered her way through a narrow gap between runners to accelerate past the pacesetting Vedevani before comfortably holding the challenge of King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Highland Reel by one and three-quarter of a length with Ascot Gold Cup hero Order Of St George a length and a half back in third.

Both second and third have an Aussie flavour with Highland Reel, who was third behind Winx in last year's Cox Plate, being a son of Elvstroem's sister Hveger (Danehill) and a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Haradasun.

Third-placed Order Of St George is part-owned by Lloyd Williams and justified the stables decision to run him at Chantilly instead of a Melbourne Cup campaign.

It was a special moment for Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore team.

"It's a great feeling to saddle the first three home in an Arc, there's not much to beat it, but it's all down to a fantastic team effort and I'm delighted for John (Magnier), Michael (Tabor), Derrick (Smith) and their families," O'Brien said.

"And what makes it amazing is that they are all by Galileo.

It was the first Arc for Galileo (photo Mark Smith) but there would be few stallions better qualified for the honour as his dam Urban Sea and half-brother Sea The Stars both won the race.

A sister Group III winners Best In The World and Magical Dream, Found is the fourth foal of the Group 1 Matron Stakes and Group 1 Lockinge Stakes winner Red Evie a daughter of Intikhab.

Red Evie is out of the stakes-winning Nordico mare Malafemmena, a half-sister to Group III Prix du Bois winner Export Price who stood at Trevenson Park Stud where he sired the Group 1 Salinger Stakes winner Notoire.

Red Evie has a yearling colt and filly foal that are both by Galileo so there is plenty to look forward to.
