Exceed And Excel Strikes again with Serenely Discreet

Mark Smith - Sunday October 2

What a weekend it has been for Darley Stud's 'king of the kids', Exceed And Excel.

He has added four new stakes winners in the space of two days courtesy of the Gimcrack Stakes winner Jorda, Breeders' Plate winner Khan and Maribyrnong Trial Stakes winner Madeenaty, and then the 3yo filly Serenely Discreet joined the party when storming home to capture Sunday's Group II Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

The Phillip Stokes-trained filly came from last on the turn under Luke Nolen to defeat Bella Sorellastra (Lope de Vega) by one and a quarter lengths with Waterloo Sunset (Fastnet Rock) a further length away in third. (photos Grant Courtney)

Despite her breeding, Serenely Discreet in on a Victoria Oaks path, but before then she could line-up in next Saturday's Group I One Thousand Guineas at Caulfield.

That was the race won by Maybe Discreet (Shamardal) who is a daughter of Serenely Discreet's 'auntie' Oh So Discreet.

"She runs if she pulls up well, but she might be best placed over a bit further now," Stokes said.

"She's definitely an Oaks filly.

"She out of the same family as Maybe Discreet and she was a Manifold winner but this one's got a lot more scope.

"We always thought she'd be better at Flemington on the bigger track and being able to get to the outside," Stokes said.

"Drawing wide today actually panned out well and she ridden quiet and able to get to the outside in the straight, when she got out in the clear she put them away.

"We gave her a jumpout at Caulfield on Tuesday just to have her perfect for today and it has worked out good."

A three-quarter sister to 4-time Listed winner Very Discreet, who was placed in the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap (1200m), Serenely Discreet is the first foal of the dual stakes winning Elusive Quality mare I'm Discreet from a wonderfully successful family descending from the Queen Adelaide Stakes winner Halo again (Don't Say Halo).

I'm Discreet has a yearling filly by Denman and was covered by Brazen Beau last spring.
