Exceed And Excel's Babies Dominate Again

Mark Smith - Sunday October 2

There have been three stakes races for juveniles in Australia this season and Exceed And Excel has sired the winners of all three.

After Jorda won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes and Khan impressed in his Listed Breeders Plate win, it was the turn of another Exceed And Excel filly, Shadwell Stud's highly-spruiked Madeenaty, to continue the run in Sunday's $120,000 Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) at Flemington.

Trained by David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Madeenaty always had the race under control.

From an inside barrier, Madeenaty jumped straight to the front without much encouragement from Mark Zahra and was only let off the bit inside the 200 metres.

It was left to another Exceed And Excel, the colt Double Jeopardy to mount any sought of challenge, but he could get no closer than two and a quarter lengths on the line. (photo Grant Courtney)

The winner's stablemate American Genius ( All American) was a half-length back in third, denying Exceed and Excel the trifecta as Godolphin's Inquiry clocked in fourth.

"She looks pretty smart, she's had my lot at home covered pretty easily and today is the first time she's been off the bit," Hayes said.

"What pleased me was how she lengthened when Mark (Zahra) asked her in what are pretty testing conditions today."

"We'll keep her sprinting and obviously target the Magic Millions and try and get (Shadwell Stud's) Angus (Gold) back for the sale.

"We might give her a run over the carnival here to give her the experience of a big day.

"Normally when you have one that is that far ahead of the others they stand up right through and I hope it's the case with this filly."

Bred and offered for sale by Segenhoe Stud, Madeenaty was purchased by Shadwell for $775,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale in January.

She is the second foal and second winner out of the top-class Reset mare Set For Fame whose five wins included three at Group II level and was runner-up in the Group 1 Australian Guineas.

A great-daughter of Bletchingly's sister Alaya, Set For Fame slipped her Exceed And Excel foal in 2014 and was covered by I Am Invincible last spring.

With three two-year-old stakes winners in the space of 24 hours, Exceed and Excel takes his total number of stakes winners to 125.
