First Runner a Winner for Squamosa

Tara Madgwick - Saturday October 1
Promising filly Kiwi Ida made it a dream start for Suns Stud's first season sire Squamosa by making a winning debut at Riccarton in New Zealand on Saturday.

Kiwi Ida- Race ImagesThe two-year-old filly put the writing on the wall with successive trial wins in August and she carried that form into her first race start in the Nobby Bussell Memorial 2YO (800m).

John and Karen Parsons have had a high opinion of their youngster since breaking her in and weren't afraid to take on the colts on debut.

"We think she is stakes class, this filly," said Karen Parsons.

Kiwi Ida (pictured blue sleeves, red cap)  justified expectation as she sat wide and then ran down hot favourite Sensei in a super impressive performance.

And the fact there was such a definitive margin (in excess of 6 lengths) to the third placegetter bodes well for the form holding up from the race.

Squamosa"What a terrific start for Squamosa, his very first runner a winner!" exclaimed Sun Stud's Danielle Cheng.

Bred and sold by Ponderosa Park, Kiwi Ida was bought by her trainers for just $4,000 at the Inglis Great Southern weanling Sale.

She is the first winner for Blevic mare Empress Ida, who comes from the family of Group III winner Royal Ida.

By red hot stallion Not A Single Doubt, Squamosa was an undefeated two-year-old and went on to win four of his seven career starts up to Group III level and was Group 1 placed.

Squamosa stands for a fee of $6,600 at Sun Stud VIC.
