Trained by Stuart Webb, Legless Veuve (images Grant Courtney) was seventh on debut in a Listed race at Flemington back in March won by Selenia, who came out and won the Group III MVRC Scarborough Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday.
Spelled after finishing second in a Listed race at her second start, the daughter of Pins was given a soft assignment first up when scoring an easy maiden win at Sale on September 11.
Pitched back into stakes company for the 1400 metre Guineas Prelude, Legless Veuve proved her potential when racing up on the pace before finding the line strongly to beat New Zealand Group I winner La Luna Rossa by half a length.
"She's still got her winter coat and she's still a fair way behind, but she's got tons of ability so we'll give the Thousand Guineas a go in two weeks and then probably put her away as she's still a baby," said Webb, who won the Group I MRC Thousand Guineas in 2010 with Yosei.
A $150,000 NZB Premier purchase from the Waikato Stud draft, Legless Veuve runs for a big group of owners and is a full sister to Group III winner Tootsie.
She is one of four winners from the unraced O'Reilly mare Hyades, who comes from the family of Group winners Red Eclipse, No Excuse Maggie and Battle Hero.
She is the 11th stakes-winner that carries the blood of Pins and O'Reilly, the nick running at an impressive 73% winners to runners.
