As a half-brother by Fastnet Rock to one of the best and toughest horses to race in many years, Comin' Through has a bit to live up to, but he's off on the right leg after a debut win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Comin' Through's half-brother is Criterion, a horse which could have done no more in terms of toughness, durability and giving his owner Sir Owen Glenn endless joy.
He won the Gr2 Todman Stakes and Gr3 Black Opal Stakes as a two-year-old and had a run in the Golden Slipper, finishing sixth to Overreach.
Then he training on for wins in the Australian Derby and Rosehill Guineas as a 3yo, Queen Elizabeth Stakes as a 4yo and as a five-year-old won the Caulfield Stakes, finished second in the Cox Plate and third in the Melbourne Cup.
Interspersed among it all were placings in the Spring Champion Stakes, Australian Guineas, and a couple of Hong Kong showpieces, the Hong Kong Cup and Audemars Piquet QEII Cup.
There was also a trip to Europe and run at Royal Ascot in a career which netted over $7 million.
Nobody could ask more of a horse, and it could only happen in Australia, which brings us to Comin' Through.
It may be the impossible task to live up to Criterion's deeds but in winning on debut at the odds of $12, it's fair to say he over-achieved a little and that's got to be a good thing.
"He's got a bright future," was trainer Chris Waller's post-race summation.
"We haven't put him under any
pressure so he's doing it all himself at the moment."
Comin' Through, who like Criterion is raced by his breeder Sir Owen Glenn, is the eighth foal and eighth winner for the remarkable Mica's Price, who has also left the stakes winners Silently and Varenna Miss.
Her yearling by Pierro sold for $750,000 at Easter this year and she has a yearling by Fastnet Rock, however missed when sent to Sebring last season.
The runner-up in the race, Potent Force is also a blueblood, by Fastnet Rock out of Comical Smile, making him a full brother to Smart Missile.
Having his second start, and first as a gelding, he showed excellent improvement but he'll be a story for another day as a win won't be far off for him.
