Bullbars Winner Impressive

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 2
A Group III winning half-brother to Helmet, NZ  based sire Bullbars produced his first Australian winner at Pakenham on Thursday with a brilliant victory for El Sicario, who is nominated for the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate.

Trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, El Sicario showed promise last season when finishing second in the Group I Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes in New Zealand to Luna Rossa before coming across to Sydney for the Group I ATC Champagne Stakes.

BullbarsHe led and over-raced on that occasion before dropping out to finish second last, so was immediately sent to the paddock.

Returning in a 1200 metre maiden at Pakenham, El Sicario was a short priced favourite and bolted away to win by three lengths, so is clearly back on track in a big way.

A $20,000 NZB Select Sale purchase for his trainer from the Wentwood Grange draft, El Sicario is one of two winners from Stravinsky (USA) mare Pica Pica who traces to celebrated Aussie matriarch Beautiful Dreamer.

This is the family of Group I winners Canny Lad, Canny Lass, Camarena, Camarilla, Guelph and of course Sepoy.

El Sicario is the best offspring to date for Bullbars, who stands at Highview Stud in New Zealand at a fee of $6,000.
