TBQA Announce Queensland Breeding Champions

Media Release - Monday August 22
Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland Association is proud to announce the 2016 Queensland Breeding Champions.

Written Tycoon has won both the Champion Sire and Champion 2yo Sire, Love Conquers All is the Champion First Season Sire, and Broodmare of the Year has been awarded to Kitalpha, dam of Capitalist.

Capitalist - Lisa GrimmOne of the quiet achievers on the Queensland breeding scene, Daandine Stud, was thrust into the spotlight this racing season, reaching dizzying heights that most breeders could only ever dream about.

Jan Clarke, from Daandine, bred not only this year's Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, but his Sire, the Champion Stallion Written Tycoon. Both horses are Queenslanders through and through!

Written Tycoon has been named Queensland's Champion Sire, as well as Queensland's Champion 2yo Sire, while Kitalpha, the dam of Capitalist, is the Broodmare of the Year.

Capitalist joins Phelan Ready and Dance Hero as the only three horses to claim the Magic Millions 2YO Classic / Golden Slipper double. He earned $3,508,700 – the World's richest 2YO, EVER!

Written Tycoon had stood in Victoria prior to coming to Queensland for the 2012 season, and it is on the back of that crop of two year olds that the stallion has recorded his best results ever. He produced four 2YO Stakes winners this season, from that Queensland crop, including Capitalist, Luna Rossa, Winning Rupert and Hot Dipped.

Not only did Written Tycoon take out Queensland's major Sire awards, but he was also named the Australian Champion 2yo Sire, an incredible feat for any Queensland stallion.

"This is good for everyone up here in Queensland and puts the spotlight on the entire industry and what we've been able to achieve up here," said a jubilant Jan.

Written TycoonJan said she's thrilled for all the connections of Written Tycoon, who holds a special place in her heart.

"He was 'my baby' and as soon as I heard he was standing here, I had to support him, so I sent my best mares.

'It's wonderful for all of Queensland, it shows we can mix it with the best and take on the big conglomerate studs," stated Jan.

Daandine Stud, has also been awarded the Broodmare of the Year, thanks again to Capitalist; with his dam, Kitalpha being awarded the title.

Kitalpha was the favourite mare of Daandine Stud's Manager, Mark McCann, long before she tasted glory.

"She was a big roomy mare, with the sweetest nature," said McCann.

"Everyone is so thrilled that she has been recognised with this honour, there is such a buzz of excitement around the Stud, we all loved her, it's just very sad that she's not with us anymore."

Kitalpha sadly died last year, just a week after giving birth to a Smart Missile filly.

She was purchased by Clarke in 2012 from the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for just $82,000 from Widden Stud. Clarke was upgrading her stock at the time, and now considers the purchase an absolute bargain!

TBQA President, Basil Nolan said this is an amazing achievement for the Queensland breeding industry.

"You don't get more Queensland than Capitalist," he said proudly.

"There aren't too many Studs that can boast breeding a Champion Stallion, and then its Champion progeny, this is a remarkable story.

"It's a credit to Jan and the hard work, dedication and passion she has applied over her lifetime involvement in the Queensland industry."

Love Conquers AllLove Conquers All, who stands at Sun Stud took out the First Season Sire category.

This promising young stallion
conquered the Queensland breeding industry in his first season. He dominated the National First Season table for much of the year. Unfortunately he lost the National title by just $30 in the last few weeks of the season!

"This is a tremendous result for any Sire, freshman or not," said Mr Nolan.

"He'll certainly be one to watch and it's great to see Sun Stud show their confidence in the Queensland industry with their strong stallion roster."

Love Conquers All has some very promising gallopers, including his star 2yo, Love Spy and Downloading, the half-brother to the Australian Champion, Buffering.

CHAMPION STATISTICS

2016 Qld Stallion of the Year – Written Tycoon
Top performer – 2013 Capitalist (c – Kitalpha) 5 starts 4(3)-1-0 $3,508,700

Written Tycoon has had an outstanding season being the sire of three individual Group One winners in the 2015-16 season. His progeny amassed $10,107,231.

Leading the way was the all-Queensland, Champion 2YO Golden Slipper winner, Capitalist. Hot on the heels of Capitalist is Bjorn Baker's elite sprinter, Music Magnate, the winner of the Doomben 10,000 and across the ditch he is the sire of the Group One winning Luna Rossa, who won the New Zealand Sires Produce Stakes.

Of the 16 Stakes winners he has sired across his breeding career, eight of them were this season and four of those were from his Queensland crop including Capitalist, Winning Rupert, Hot Dipped and Luna Rossa.

In his entire breeding career Written Tycoon has never achieved the results or success that he has attained from standing here in Queensland.

Written Tycoon was bred by Jan Clarke at Daandine Stud, near Warwick on the Darling Downs. Jan also bred Capitalist.

2016 Champion 2YO Stallion – Written Tycoon
Top 2yo performer - Capitalist (c – Kitalpha) 5 starts 4(3)-1-0 $3,508,700

It was Written Tycoon's outstanding two year old crop that contributed significantly to his Champion Sire title, so it goes without saying that he would also be awarded Champion 2yo Sire.

His two year crop banked a total of $4,360,731. Capitalist was his highest earner with $3,508,700. This was a world record prize money total for any two year old!

His other Group One winning 2YO was the New Zealand based, Murray Baker-trained Luna Rossa, who won the New Zealand Sires Produce Stakes, coming from ten lengths last to win. Luna Rossa collected NZ$155,900.

His other 2YO Stakes winners include the undefeated Winning Rupert, and Hot Dipped.

Written Tycoon had a total of 27 2YO starters for 13 winners (including four Stakes winners) and two placegetters.

These two year olds were old bred when Written Tycoon was standing at Eliza Park (now Sun Stud) in Queensland, producing the best crop of his entire career. This is an amazing achievement, and proves the strength of Queensland breeding.

2016 Champion Broodmare - Kitalpha
It was another difficult decision for Broodmare of the Year, with so many top performing Queensland-bred candidates performing at Group level.

This year's standouts included former Champion Broodmare, Action Annie (Buffering) and newcomer Tolhart (Miss Cover Girl) but of course, judges couldn't go past the dam of Capitalist – Kitalpha.
Kitalpha NZ 2005, by Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) had an unimpressive racing career earning just $19,140 from fifteen starts (1-0-2).
Kitalpha has had just four foals: Lushan and Capitalist are the only two to race.

Lushan by Northern Meteor. This gelding hasn't set the world on fire, with one win and $9,600 from seven starts.

The outstanding Capitalist who won the Listed Breeders Plate, Magic Millions 2YO Classic, and Group 1 Golden Slipper and placed second in the Group 2 Todman and banked $3,508,700 this season. The richest 2YO in the World – ever!
She has a yearling filly by Real Saga, called Stresa, who is yet to race and will be trained by Tony Gollan.

Kitalpha's last foal is a weanling filly by Smart Missile. This striking filly is a three-quarter sister to the Stakes placed Mediterranean. Unfortunately Kitalpha was struck down with colic and died a week after giving birth to this filly.

Kitalpha is owned by Jan Clarke at Daandine Stud near Warwick on the Darling Downs, where Capitalist, and his Champion Sire, Written Tycoon were both bred.
