New Stakes-winner for Star Aussie Broodmare

Tara Madgwick - Thursday August 18
Australian broodmare Hveger has been basking in the glory of her Group I winning son Highland Reel this year, but it was another of her offspring in Idaho that was writing the latest chapter of her success with a win overnight in the Group II Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.

A promising staying three year-old by Highland Reel's sire Galileo, Idaho was second in the Group I Irish Derby and third in the Group I Epsom Derby so was well overdue for a stakes success.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Seamie Heffernan, Idaho strode away to win by a length and three-quarters in the 1m4f staying test and is now favourite for the Group I St Leger.

"That was a lovely comeback run. We had our eye on the Leger and we just wanted to let Idaho relax. Jamie (Spencer) went a nice sensible pace in front and Housesofparliament (runner up) ran a blinder. Seamus´ horse relaxed lovely and he came through at the end, you would have to be very happy," said Aidan O'Brien.

Highland Reel - Grant Courtney"The lads will decide what they want to do but Jamie said his horse stays very well and Seamus was very happy with his horse. I am not sure Idaho would go up much further than a mile and six, he would be very happy coming back to a mile and a quarter/a mile and a half as a four-year-old, he travels very well ."

With two wins and four placings from seven starts, Idaho was a 750,000 guinea purchases from the Camas Park draft at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and runs for a Coolmore Syndicate.

It was nearly a stakes double for Hveger at York with Highland Reel a gallant second to Postponed in the Group I Juddmonte International.

A Group I placed sibling by champion sire Danehill to champions Elvstroem and Haradasun from the family of Starspangledbanner, Hveger is making a big impression on the world stage.

The current yearling from Hveger, a filly by Galileo, will be offered at the 2016 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale as Lot 109.

What will she be worth?
