The
last crop of foals by ill-fated Northern Meteor have just turned three and
there are bound to be some stars amongst them with this Sun Stud owned colt casting
off maiden status at Geelong on Wednesday.
Trained by the Hayes / Dabernig partnership, Northern Lion did everything right
to score a smooth three-quarter length win in the 1300 metre maiden against
older rivals.
The performance was in stark contrast to his unplaced debut at Sandown back in
February when everything that could go wrong did.
With this icebreaking win out of the way it should be onwards and upwards for
Northern Lion, who holds an entry for the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas.
A $130,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Sun Bloodstock from the Turangga Farm
draft, Northern Lion is a half-brother to stakes-placed Mahican and is the
fourth winner for stakes-placed Eskaw, a half-sister to stakes-winners Our
Quivira and Kishkat.
Northern Lion is sadly the last foal of Eskaw, who died in 2014.
