DUAL
Group 1 winner Srikandi, who is the highest earning female by Darley flagbearer
Dubawi (IRE) in the world, has been retired from racing and will visit Snitzel this
season.
Shares totaling 31 per cent were recently sold in the six-year-old with Greg
Ingham – a major owner in star sprinter Chautauqua – snapping up 15 per cent. The
Srikandi group is made up of seven owners who have varied interests in Port
Douglas, North Queensland.
Srikandi was saddled by up-and-coming trainer Ciaron Maher to win nine of her
15 starts, amassing prize-money of A$2,377,900, with her biggest victories
coming at the highest level in the Stradbroke Handicap and Tattersall's Club
Tiara. She also ran a fine second to Chautauqua in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes.
The mare was last seen in action at Flemington in November, but has since been
recovering from a stress fracture at vet Kim McKellar's stud Windholm Park in
Ballarat.
Srikandi is one of 23 Group or Grade 1 winners sired by Dubawi, the number one
son of top-class performer Dubai Millennium. Dubawi's leading lights include
triple Group 1 scorer Postponed, who ran out the easy winner of the Coronation
Cup on his last start.
She boasts a pedigree right out of the top drawer, being a daughter of talented
sprinter Raining, who has speed influences on both sides of her pedigree
through star producer Star Kingdom and the likes of Dark Jewel, Kaoru Star,
Luskin Star, Biscay, Bletchingly and others.
Raining is also responsible for Group 3 scorer Rain Gal, a daughter of Galileo,
the multiple winning and stakes-placed runner Arjuna, by Giant's Causeway, and
dual winner Raksasa, who like Rain Gal is by Galileo.
Further back it is the family of Group 1 winner Pontormo.
Srikandi will take up residency at Kitchwin Hills in New South Wales and farm
manager Mick Malone yesterday said: "We're delighted Srikandi's owners have
decided to send her to Kitchwin Hills, where she will join a long list of
outstanding broodmare talent.
"She was one of hell of a racehorse, but she's also got a stellar pedigree to
boot, which makes it even more exciting. Being a daughter of Dubawi is also a
major bonus, as it opens up so many avenues when you consider the number of
Danehill and Danehill-line stallions in Australia."
Malone added: "Srikandi had bags of speed and a mating with Snitzel looks the
perfect match. He continues to produce stock of the highest calibre, who run at
two and invariably train on."
