Third Stakes for Exceed And Excel's First Among Equals

Mark Smith - Sunday August 14

After rounding out last season with a Listed stakes win, First Among Equals started the new one in a similar vein, coming from midfield to take Saturday's Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m) at Belmont.

Sent out an odds-on favourite under Paul Harvey, the Simon Miller trainee once again relegated Rock Bubble (Redoute's Choice) to the runner-up stall by half a length with Checkpoint (Snitzel) a length and a half back in third.

The 5-year-old gelding advances his overall record to 10 wins, 2 seconds and 3 thirds from 19 starts with earnings of $483,180.

The son of Exceed and Excel was an $85,000 purchase by Cape Fall Thoroughbreds at the 2012 Magic Millions National Weanling sale.

A have brother to three winners including the Melbourne winner Valedictorian (Lonhro), First Among Equals is out of the Group III Desert Gold Stakes winner Pride Of The Class (Volksraad) a half-sister to Group II Hollindale stakes winner Fulmonti (Montjeu) and Listed Cranbourne Cup winner Majestical (Montjeu).

Purchased by the Vieira Group for $82,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions National Broodmare sale when carrying a colt by Sebring, Pride Of The Class had a So You Think colt sell at the 2016 Magic Millions Yearling sale to Aquis Farm for $120,000.

Not served in 2014, Pride Of The Class visited Pierro last spring.
