Fifth Stakes Win for Encosta de Lago's Miss Rose de Lago

As a daughter of Encosta de Lago, who last season ended Zabeel's reign as champion broodmare sire, the temptation must have been to send the flashy Miss Rose de Lago to stud this spring, but the spectacularly marked 6yo mare showed she had plenty of racing left in her following a dominant performance in Saturday's $200,000 Group II P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Ridden by Damien Oliver, Miss Rose de Lago sat just off the pace set by Lord Of The Sky with The Cleaner and Mahuta close-up.

Brought out four wide to make her challenge, the daughter of Encosta de Lago came clear to defeat by Jacquinot Bay (Galileo) by half a length with a similar distance back to Entirely Platinum (Pentire) in third.(photos Grant Courtney) .

A two-time stakes-winner at three in Western Australia when trained by Simon Miller, Miss Rose de Lago has added a further three stakes wins for Danny O'Brien, two of those, the P.B. Lawrence and the Listed Ladies Day Vase, at Caulfield and the Group II Sunline Stakes at Moonee Valley.

O'Brien said it was planned that Miss Rose De Lago would start her spring campaign early.

"We had a look at the program and the mares' races didn't start till later in the spring so we thought it was a good time to test her against the boys," O'Brien said.

"There's three weeks now until the (GrII) Dato (Tan Nim Chan Stakes) and she's been very effective at Moonee Valley.

"She has a great record here and it all fell into place for her.

"She needs a really solid tempo to be at her best at this distance and she got it.

 "I thought she was really brave to soak it up and then be strong to the line."

A $210,000 purchase by Barry and Jan McCrostie from the Coolmore Stud draft at the 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale, Miss Rose de Lago advances her overall record to 9 wins, 4 seconds and 3 thirds from 29 starts with earnings of $882,640.

The McCostie's purchased Miss Rose de Lago's half-sister by High Chaparral (IRE) for $30,000 at the 2015 NZB Premier Yearling sale.

Her dam Crimson Dawn (GB) (Fasliyev) is a daughter of Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Mail The Desert (Desert Prince).

Crimson Dawn (GB) has a 2yo colt by Fastnet Rock and a yearling filly by High Chaparral (IRE). She was bred back to Choisir last spring.
