Opening
his account with a dominant win at Sandown on Wednesday beating older rivals
was progressive Sepoy colt Havildar, a $250,000 Magic Millions purchase for Ciaron
Maher Racing from the Newhaven Park draft.
Spelled after finishing midfield in the Listed VRC Talindert Stakes at his
second start, the Ciaron Maher trained colt was third at Caulfield when
resuming on July 16 and stripped much fitter for this assignment.
He travelled well for Nick Hall and dashed clear down the running to win the
1300 metre maiden against all comers by more than a length.
"He's a nice horse and they have a good opinion of him," said Hall.
"He put them away easily."
Havildar is the first foal of good metropolitan winning Domesday mare Zigzag, a
half-sister to Group III winner Detours.
He is the first winner of the new season for Darley's Golden Slipper winner
Sepoy, whose service fee has been reduced this spring to $33,000.
