Champion
Australian racehorse and sire Lonhro shuttled to Kentucky for three seasons for
Darley and has posted a number of smart Northern Hemisphere bred performers
from this exercise including speedy colt Holding Gold, who posted his first
Black Type win at Saratoga on Thursday in the $100,000 Quick Call Stakes.
A homebred for Live Oak Plantation Stud prepared by Mark Casse, Holding Gold
took the five and a half furlong sprint on turf by a head taking his overall
record to three wins and two seconds from six starts with prizemoney nearing
$150,000.
"He's a pretty nice horse," said Mark Casse.
"My biggest concern was a little bit of the cutback, but I felt pretty good
down the backside we were only a length or two behind. He's a homebred for Mrs.
Weber so that makes it even more special. He's probably going to stay on this
surface."
The 62nd stakes-winner worldwide for Lonhro, Holding Gold is the
best of five winners from Group I Belmont Gazelle Stakes winner In the Gold, a
daughter of the AP Indy stallion Golden Missile.
In The Gold is now in Australia having been purchased by bloodstock agent
Stephen Hillen for $230,000 at the 2013 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
She was exported to Goldin Farms in South Australia in 2014 and has a yearling
colt by their foundation sire Akeed Mofeed (GB) and will foal again to the
Group I winning son of Dubawi this spring.
