Derby Winner for Turffontein

Tara Madgwick - Sunday July 17
'Top End' sensation Finke capped a remarkable winning sequence of eight straight wins with a dominant victory in the $135,000 Northern Territory Derby at Fannie Bay in Darwin on Saturday.

Bred in Victoria at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, Finke was a $15,000 purchase from their draft at the Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale.

He had four unplaced starts in Adelaide for Kristi Evans before transferring north to the stable of Gary Clarke and has not looked back.

Unbeaten for his new trainer, Finke was a runaway winner last start of the Darwin Guineas and kept up the good work in his first attempt at 2000 metres.

TurffonteinSent out a hot favourite, Finke again triumphed over I Am Invincible gelding Abu Dhabi, who also chased him home in the Guineas.

By winning the Darwin Guineas and NT Derby, Finke has now captured the first two legs of the $100,000 Triple Crown bonus.

The third leg is the Darwin Cup (2000m) on August 1.

"He's not a stunning horse to look at but he keeps getting it done — I haven't found the bottom of him yet," Clarke said.

"I will wait to see how he pulls up and make a decision on whether we press on to the Cup come Wednesday."

With eight wins from 12 starts and prizemoney topping $250,000, Finke is the best of three winners from Desert Prince (IRE) mare Bloomin Marvellous who comes from the family of Group II winner Innovation Girl.

His sire Turffontein stands at Blue Gum Farm at a fee of $11,000 this spring.
