Torryburn Bred Winner Headed to Hong Kong

Tara Madgwick - Saturday June 4
Hong Kong beckons the unbeaten Magic Albert gelding Bao Shan Magic following the three-year-old's trouncing of a competitive line up at Ellerslie.

Bao Shan Magic - Trish Dunnell"He's qualified now so hopefully his owner can get a permit and he'll have a lot of fun with him," Pukekohe trainer Nigel Tiley said.

A $150,000 Karaka Ready to Run Sale purchase for the Hong Kong-based businessman Johnny Shih in 2014, Bao Shan Magic was originally a $46,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the draft of Torryburn stud.

He had been an impressive debut winner on his home track last month and Tiley was again confident of a repeat performance in Saturday's Shocking @ Rich Hill Stud 1600.

"He's a quality horse and he learned a lot from his first run," he said.

"There was a bit of a question mark about him handling the track, but his work on Thursday was outstanding. He's still a young horse and he's got it all ahead of him."

Bao Shan Magic was near the back of a small field on the turn, but once balanced in the straight he lengthened stride stylishly for Tiley's wife Lee to bound to the front 200 metres from home.

"He's a lovely horse with a big stride," she said. "When he heard the other horse coming he was always up for the challenge."

Bred by Torryburn Stud in partnership, Bao Shan Magic is the second winner for Nephtys, a winning Redoute's Choice mare from the family of Group I winner Star Shiraz.

Nephtys was covered last spring by Hinchinbrook and her yearling Mossman colt was bought by Prime Thoroughbreds for $75,000 at Inglis Classic this year.

Former Yarraman Park based sire Magic Albert has enjoyed good success as a sire in Hong Kong and Bao Shan Magic looks well placed to add further to his record.

A proven Group I producing sire he now stands at Kooringal Stud at a fee of $8,800.
