Runway
Star was the most expensive filly from the first crop of ill-fated Northern
Meteor and she scored a career best win in the Group III SAJC Proud Miss Stakes
on Saturday carrying the colours of Vinery Stud.
Now with Phillip Stokes after transferring from Peter Moody, Runway Star runs for
a syndicate of Vinery stud partners and was coming off a good last start sixth
in the Group I SAJC Robert Sangster Stakes.
She was strong to the line in winning the 1200 metre sprint by a neck.
"She's a very smart mare and I just hope they keep her racing as opposed
to sending her to stud," Stokes said.
"She's a pleasure to have around and is doing a great job. I think she can
run a strong 1400 (metres) and a race like the Tatts Tiara in Brisbane next
month would suit."
Injured earlier in her career which resulted in the loss of her two year-old
season, Runway Star now has the overall record of six wins and three placings
rom 18 starts with prizemoney topping $380,000.
Runway Star was a $300,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Belmont Bloodstock from
the draft of Widden Stud.
Bred by Widden Stud and partners, Runway Star is the first foal of
stakes-placed Commands mare Intuit, a daughter of Group I winner Wrap Around
and half-sister to the dam of Champion 2YO Fashions Afield.
The family has had an impressive update this year as Fashions Afield is the dam
of Group II ATC Todman Stakes winner Kiss and Make Up.
Widden Stud sold the current yearling from Intuit, a filly by Sebring, for
$165,000 at Magic Millions earlier this year.
