The Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks was thrown wide open when the undefeated
champion Songbird was sidelined due to a virus and it was Cathryn Sophia, a
daughter of Darley shuttler Street Boss that proved the beneficiary.
Ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer John Servis, Cathryn
Sophia was thought to be a query at the distance. That proved unfounded as she
hit the line strongly to defeat Land Over Sea (Bellamy Road) by two and
three-quarter lengths with Lewis Bay (Bernardini) a neck back in third. (photo Darley)
Purchased for $30,000 by Cash is King from the Chanceland
Farm consignment of the 2014 Fasig-Tipton September selected yearling sale, Cathryn
Sophia advances her overall record to 5 wins and 1 third from 6 starts for
earnings of $949,720.
She is the only winner from four foals out of the unraced
Mineshaft mare Sheave, a half-sister to Stakes winner Taketheodds (by Street
Sense), out of Grade II Golden Rod Stakes winner and Grade 1 placed Belterra
(Unbridled).
Cathryn Sophia becomes the fourth winner at the highest
level for Street Boss (USA) after Newmarket Handicap winner The Quarterback, Arkansas
Derby winner Danza and King's Bishop victor Capo Bastone.
Street Boss (USA) will stand the upcoming breeding season at
Northwood Park at a fee of $27,500 inc. GST.
