2016 Hawkesbury Rush review and jockeys

Clinton Payne - Saturday April 30

The John O'Shea-trained Furnaces landed a solid blow on bookmakers when taking out the $125,000 Hawkesbury XXXX Gold Rush (1100m) at Hawkesbury on Saturday.

Furnaces was strongly fancied on-course, firming from $3.80 into $2.90 before lowering the 1100 metre Hawkesbury track record (1.01.88 – Diamond Fund in September 2013) by more than half a second when stopping the clock at 1.01.35.

Furnaces ($2.90 fav) raced on speed before holding out a spirited late challenge by the Gerald Ryan-trained Inz'n'out, defeated a head, with a half-length back to Joe Pride's Kuro ($6.50) in third.

"We think he probably choked down first-up. Something wasn't right," stable spokesman Darren Beadman said.

"John (O'Shea) tinkered with a few things, the way he trained him and done a few different things with him during the day and it's worked with the horse.

"They don't work like he did on Tuesday and not win.

"He'll probably head to Brisbane. I'd say there's probably a race in Brisbane for him. He's up to weight-for-age."

Lovely effort. We expected that from him last start but he's bounced back well.

2nd

INZ'N'OUT

Christian Reith

Ran super. Ran his absolute heart out but just found one a little bit better.

3rd

KURO

Brenton Avdulla

Ran super. I think Joe's got him going really well, we just had to give them seven kilos.

Really good run. Got squeezed out of it, was beaten for speed, then went back to the inside in the straight and he made up a lot of ground.

5th

FINE MIST

Blake Shinn

She ran well and will take good benefit from the run. She's in for a good prep.

6th

COOLRING

Glyn Schofield

They were a bit too quick for him today.

ALBERTO MAGIC

Jason Collett

He was disappointing again today.
