First Stakes Winner for Captain Sonador

Mark Smith - Monday April 25

The omen tip of the day, Throssell, kept his unbeaten record intact when winning the Listed ANZAC Day Stakes at Flemington.

Named after Victoria Cross winner Hugo Throssell, the 2yo gelding credited his sire Captain Sonador with his first stakes winner.

Coming off a debut win at Bendigo on April 9, Throssell did it the hard way after being caught three deep under Nick Hall.

The Ciaron Maher trainee did not shirk his task, coming one and a quarter length clear of last start Sandown winner Pyx Chamber (Street Cry) with the promising filly Smart As You Think (So You Think), not having the best of luck in the straight, a length back in third.

"Whatever he's doing now he seems to be doing on raw ability and I think he's still got to grow a bit as well.

"You could see he was off the bit well before the turn and he didn't really know how to build into the race

"He's got a bright future I think."

Maher said the Caulfield Guineas and Victoria Derby are long range goals for Throssell (pictured as a yearling).

A $70,000 purchase by Wylie Dalziel/Moody Racing from book 2 of the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling sale, Throssell was bred by Basil Nolan and was consigned by Raheen Stud.

He is a half-brother to three winners including the stakes-placed Germayne Lass (Stromberg Carlson).

His Sydney winning dam O'Venus (Anabba) is a half-sister to Group III winner Vigil (Danehill).

O'Venus has a colt foal by Golden Archer and was bred back to the 5-time stakes winning son of Rock Of Gibraltar again last spring.
