A fast finishing second in the Golden Slipper a fortnight back, bargain basement buy Yankee Rose came out to dominate Saturday's $1 million Group I ATC Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes (1600m) at Randwick and credit the filly's sire All American and trainer David Vandyke with their first Group 1 winners.
Ridden by Zac Purton, Yankee Rose travelled sweetly midfield before tracking up under a minimum of urging to be in a challenging position on the turn.
A shake of the reins by Purton was all that was needed for Yankee Rose to draw two and a half lengths clear of Telperion with Faraway Town finishing strongly into third place a further two and quarter lengths back. (photos Lisa Grimm)
A $10,000 purchase by Darby Racing from the Widden Stud consignment at the 2015 Inglis Classic Yearling sale, Yankee Rose advances her record to 3 wins and 1 second from 4 starts for earnings of $1,511,700.
"I've been trying to win a Group One for 29 years and had probably 30 runners but to win that race like that today - I can't describe how I'm feeling," Vandyke said.
"To win one at Randwick - I started working here when I was a teenager and this track means so much to me more than any other.
"I am still numb. I can't believe I have actually won a Group 1,
"When I walk around with her and do things with her, I think she's an average sort of filly but when she races it's a different story.
"She's just outstanding and has champion qualities. She was outstanding in the Slipper and went on with it today."
Bred by Wexford Farm, Doyles Breeding & Racing, Wamslet P/Ship,Yankee Rose is out of the Xaar mare Condesaar who is a half-sister to Group 1 NZ Derby winner Redoute's Dancer.
There is further stamina in the pedigree through Condesaar's granddam Condessa (Condorcet) whose five wins included the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks and was runner-up in the Group 1 Irish Oaks.
Sold by Wexford Farm last year for just $6,000 to JD Thoroughbreds, Condesaar has had a troubled recent history at stud.
She slipped in 2013 before producing a filly by Magic Albert last year.
She was bred back to Whittington but failed to conceive.
Her sire All American is no longer at Arrowfield Stud having relocated to Geisel Park in WA. Click here to find out more.
